Welcome to TIPP 2023

Dear Delegates

It is with great pleasure that we welcome everyone to attend the Technology and Instrumentation in Particle Physics (TIPP) 2023 conference held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre in Cape Town, South Africa from 04 to 08 September, 2023.  . The TIPP 2023 is hosted by iThemba Laboratory for Accelerator Based Sciences (iThemba LABS), the largest accelerator facility in the southern hemisphere.

The TIPP conference series, the science driven cross-disciplinary conference, started in Tsukuba, Japan in 2009 (TIPP 2009), followed by Chicago in 2011 (TIPP 2011), Amsterdam in 2014 (TIPP2014), Beijing in 2017 (TIPP2017) and TRIUMF in 2021 (TIPP2021, remote). The conference aims to provide a stimulating atmosphere for scientists and engineers from around the world. The conference will, as in the past, include plenary invited talks and parallel tracks with contributions outlining state-of-the-art developments in different areas. The program focuses on all areas of detector development and instrumentation in particle physics, astro-particle physics and closely related fields, in particular:

• Accelerator-based particle physics
• Non-accelerator particle physics and particle astrophysics
• Experiments with synchrotron radiation and neutrons
• Nuclear physics
• Instrumentation and monitoring of particle and photon beams
• Applications in photon science, biology, medicine, and engineering

The conference will be held for the first time on the African continent, in Cape Town, South Africa’s multicultural, history-rich melting pot. South Africa, and Cape Town in particular, is rapidly becoming a prime scientific destination of choice as a result of the science and technology innovations and research being undertaken here on an interconnected global scale. The area also offers the discerning tourist an exciting mix of activities. Cape Town is a vibrant, trendy, sophisticated, well-connected, modern metropole with top tourist attractions and breathtakingly beautiful nature to explore throughout the surrounding Western Cape.
